Exotic Invasive Vegetation
Environmental Sustainability through Invasive Exotic Vegetation Removal
Negative Effects of Invasive Exotic Species
The City of Parkland is dedicated to eradicating invasive exotic vegetation, thereby revitalizing and preserving natural habitats. Exotic species are those which have been introduced to Florida (either purposefully or accidentally) from a natural range located outside of Florida. In this area, we encounter many exotic species, both plant and animal. Once an exotic species has adapted to its new habitat and begun to expand on its own, it can be referred to as an "invasive exotic species." Invasive exotic vegetation displaces native animals and plants, spreads rapidly, and is an overall detriment to the health and stability of our ecosystem.
How Property Owners Can Help
To eliminate invasive exotic vegetative species in a sustainable manner, the City of Parkland has established various programs and requirements that support this goal. For example, the City's code of ordinances requires that when new homes are built, all invasive exotic vegetation shall be removed from the entire property. Before a contractor commences the removals, the owner must apply for and obtain a Tree Removal Permit at no charge from the City's Engineering Department. The permit includes a preliminary site assessment by the City Arborist to ensure the vegetation qualifies for removal as exotic invasive species, and a final inspection to verify the work was completed.
Incentive Opportunities for You
Through the City of Parkland's Environmental Sustainability Incentive Program, property owners may apply for reimbursement of up to 25% of the property owner's costs for removal of exotic invasive vegetation. Eligible applicants must have already obtained a no-charge permit for Exotic Vegetation Removal and completed all required inspections. City staff is available to answer your questions and provide additional information on this opportunity; please email landscape@cityofparkland.org for questions and to obtain a copy of the application form.
