Commissioner Neil Kanterman (District 4)

Overview

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Neil was raised in Suffolk County, Long Island. From a very early age, Neil knew that he wanted to be a physician. He volunteered at Mather Memorial Hospital throughout high school where he developed a deep respect for the field of medicine.

Neil received his bachelor’s degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York. While he was in college, two moments changed the trajectory of his life. In 1991, he moved to Parkland for the first time and fell in love with the city, especially its agricultural and equestrian roots. Poolside of the now renamed “Winner’s Circle” apartments, was where he met his future wife, Andrea and they knew that Parkland would be their forever home.

At the same time, Neil filled a temporary position at the Rand Eye Institute, where he was amazed and intrigued by the unique blend of medicine and surgery required in the practice of ophthalmology.

After getting married in 1997, Neil graduated medical school from the University of Miami. He matched in ophthalmology at Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, followed by a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Neil returned to South Florida to join Pediatric Ophthalmology Consultants of South Florida, where he continues to care for the children of the area in all aspects of medical and surgical eye care with a special interest in the treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity in various Neonatal ICUs in the area.

Neil and Andrea have dedicated a significant portion of their lives to promoting health and wellness, and they own CrossFit Hardcore West “The Park” here in Parkland. Neil is a national coach for USA Weightlifting, a national and international champion in the sport, and a category 2 International Weightlifting Federation Technical Official.

Neil and Andrea have been supportive of many local charity groups, including Kid Safe USA, for which Andrea provided teaching to children of all ages about personal safety, SOS Children’s Villages, Make Our Schools Safe, and Butterfly Children’s Charities.

Neil and Andrea have raised two children, Matthew and Samantha. Neil is an avid fan and territory member for the Florida Panthers. He is proud and honored to serve the city he loves as the City Commissioner of District 4.
