Garbage Collection

In accordance with Chapter 7 and Appendix A of the City's Code of Ordinances, the City of Parkland requires that residential and commercial property owners utilize Waste Management for the collection of garbage. Please contact Waste Management at 954.974.7500 for any questions or concerns regarding your garbage collection. Garbage pick-up occurs twice a week on designated collection days and garbage may be placed curbside not more than 12 hours prior to the scheduled collection. All garbage must be placed in your new 96-gallon green WM cart. There is no limit to the number of new green WM carts (additional carts can be purchased for a one-time fee of $100 per cart) that may be placed at the curb. Special and hazardous wastes including, but not limited to, construction materials, paints, automobile parts, electronics, and household cleaners are excluded and will not be collected (see below for information on household hazardous waste disposal).

Recycling

The City of Parkland requires that residential property owners recycle and utilize Waste Management for the collection of recyclable materials. Waste Management will provide each residential customer with one - 64 gallon rollout cart (white with green lid) which is to be used for all accepted recyclable materials. Pick-up of recyclable materials occurs once per week and shall be placed curbside with the regular garbage on your scheduled recycling day. Acceptable materials include:

• Newspapers and inserts
• Plastic containers, number 1 - 7
• Magazines, catalogs, and phone books
• Juice boxes, cardboard boxes flattened
• Glass bottles and jars
• Steel, tin, and aluminum cans
• Office paper and junk mail
• Cereal and tissue boxes

Holiday Schedule

Trash and recycling are collected on all holidays with the exception of Christmas Day. In the event your regularly scheduled trash and/or recycling collection day coincides with Christmas Day, it will be collected on the next regularly scheduled pick-up day.

Horticultural Debris Pick Up Days & Instructions

Horticultural debris consisting of grass clippings, palm fronds, or small tree branches are collected on the same day as recycle pick-up but must be separated from the trash debris. All tree trimmings, branches, and palm fronds should be cut, tied, and neatly placed at the curb in bundles not exceeding four feet (4’) in length, fifty pounds (50 lbs.) in weight, and placed within five feet (5’) of the hard-topped road. Tree stumps and logs will only be collected on bulk pick-up days provided they are cut properly and placed neatly at the curb.

Bulk Trash Pick-Up Days & Instructions

The City of Parkland (City) contracts with Waste Management for all garbage and bulk trash pick-up. Pick-up for bulk trash is once per month (12 times per year) and allows up to 15 cubic yards of bulk trash for each pick-up date. Bulk trash shall be placed curbside no more than 48 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up for large lots (72 hours if the time frame includes a weekend). If you live in a homeowners’ association, check with your property management as there may be more strict guidelines to this and other details laid out here.

Bulk trash is defined as large items that normally exceed 50 pounds and are too large to fit in a typical roll-out garbage receptacle. Examples of bulk trash items include white goods (domestic appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers), furniture, and large branches. Refrigerators and air conditioners must have all freon removed. Bulk does not include any form of matter or debris resulting from land-clearing, land development, or building demolition. Nor does it include automobiles or their components, boats, internal combustion engines, glass or mirrors, hazardous waste, or biomedical waste.

According to City code, bulk pick-up shall not include tree stumps or mature trees unless reduced to a size and weight that can be managed by a grapple truck. Bulk trash shall be placed curbside in a neat and orderly manner with tree trunks, logs, and large limbs cut into sections not to exceed four feet. Lumber, metal poles, and similar items must also be cut into sections not to exceed four feet.

Bulk trash should not be set out for collection in front of a tree or close to a fire hydrant, mailbox, utility pole, cable box, car, or fence. Nor should it be placed within 10 feet of ditches, storm drains, swales/canals, or in a manner in which it could fall into ditches storm drains, or swales/canals. It is expressly forbidden and a violation of City code to set out trash of any kind on property other than your own.

Bulk trash pick-up can be suspended due to weather.

Bulk drop-off is no longer available.

Refrigerator or Freezer Bulk Trash Disposal

If a resident has a refrigerator or freezer that they want to have picked up during bulk, they need to first have the Freon removed. A professional can provide that service and will then "tag" the appliance so Waste Management can collect.
