Psyched for the Psychological Thriller with speaker Dr. Margery Marcus

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

Unstable narrators, unexpected plot twists and heightened suspense are the hallmarks of great psychological thrillers. The recent successes of Gone Girl, Girl on the Train and The Woman in the Window attest to our appetite for novels that both engage and challenge readers. The psychological thriller tradition goes back 150 years and more. This lecture examines the history of thrillers from the Victorian writer Wilkie Collins, who popularized the genre, through the 21st century’s best reads. It looks at the work of Henry James, Daphne du Maurier, and Patricia Highsmith, along with novels by Dennis Lehane, Gillian Flynn, and A.J. Finn. Dr. Margery Marcus’s lively and informative lectures have earned her a following at lifelong learning societies and cultural events throughout South Florida. This lecture is accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation and a handout of reading recommendations. Registration required. To register visit www.cityofparkland.org/library or call (954)757-4207.
