Mission and Responsibilities

The Planning & Zoning Department's mission is to promote orderly and quality development in the community by ensuring that all land use and development proposals conform to the City's Comprehensive Plan and Code of Ordinances. Our Department is responsible for performing a number of different functions including:

  • Reviewing applications for rezoning land, plats, site plans, land use amendments, annexations, variances and abandonments.
  • Recommending and processing changes to the City's land development regulations.
  • Preparing periodic updates to the City's Comprehensive Development Plan and monitoring its implementation.
  • Reviewing all building permit applications for compliance with planning and zoning requirements (including setbacks for all additions, pools and deck/screens.).
  • Maintaining updated maps, land use, population, housing and other information.

Once Staff reviews any development proposal or code amendment, it is then processed to the City’s Planning and Zoning Board for further consideration. The Planning and Zoning Board makes an advisory recommendation to the City Commission which is responsible for taking action on such matters.
