The City of
Parkland recently initiated a new Tennis Program at Terramar Park
that aspires to be a World Class instructional facility for Junior
players. Headed by Director’s Nick Hall and Ken Collins, the
United States Tennis Federation is offering a program that mixes
fun with learning and taking the game to its optimum level.
Hall is from
Port Augusta, South Australia. He came to the U.S. four years ago
after touring with Austria’s number 1 female Junior player
and the number 1 Boy’s 15 year old player. Hall’s credentials
also boast a tenure assisting former Davis Cup Coach and Captain
Gunther Bresnik training several of Austria’s Junior Davis
Cup Players as well as other top ranked Juniors from Austria, Italy
and Germany. Hall’s goal is to turn out State and Nationally
ranked Juniors with what he calls “a well rounded all court
game. That exemplifies the difference in their tennis program, a
complete game with an unbelievable attention to detail in their
stroke production.
Collins hails
from the Hopewell Junction, N.Y. area and comes with a wealth of
experience. From High School Head Coach to NCAA Division 1 College
Coach, he brings a nitty-gritty philosophy to the camp that mixes
tennis play with vigorous physical training. He is a firm believer
in developing stamina and strength and has these young players running
three miles each day. Collins tennis background also includes tenure
as the Ivory Coast Davis Cup Coach where he developed his teaching
program and took under developed players and taught them the mind
set needed to become winners by mixing traditional coaching with
yoga and other mind strengthening formulas. He has had several players
in the top 10 ITF World Junior’s rankings. Collins also has
a keen knowledge of what it takes to earn scholarship money. “We
don’t want to be just a camp where kids learn to play tennis.
We want to offer the opportunity of a tennis future to these players.
Parkland has the right make up to develop world class juniors. It
enjoys a great cultural mix supported by strong family values and
the drive for success. I couldn’t think of a better place
to get world class training without leaving the neighborhood.”
The U.S.T.F.’s
program at Terramar Park is not simply for juniors. It has been
structured to offer a complete program that includes beginners as
well as advanced. There are also Men and Woman’s Adult leagues
and clinics are offered for all ages and levels of play. Collins
says this is a sport that can be taken up at any age and for those
already playing there’s always room for improvement. There
are also plans in the making for Parkland’s first closed tennis
tournament to be announced at a later date.
The next few
years should be a tennis thrill here in Parkland so come out and
join them and have some fun while improving your game. As the Aussie’s
say, “no worries mate.”
