Parkland City Update
Department: City Administration
Updated March 26, 2008Coming Soon: Single Stream Recycling
At its January 16, 2008 City Commission Meeting, the City Commission authorized a new Franchise Agreement with Waste Management regarding residential solid waste and recyclable collection. The new Agreement provides for the implementation of a new “Single Stream” recycling program, a first in Broward County and the wave of the future in collection of residential recyclables.
Whereas, the current collection program requires residents to sort recyclable materials, the new program will allow residents to commingle all materials in one 64 gallon rollout cart which would be placed curbside on your currently scheduled recycling collection day. Additionally, the new program allows for a wider variety of materials then the current program. The current program accepts newspapers, plastic containers numbered 1 through 7, aluminum/bi-metal cans, and clear glass products only (plastic bags are not accepted). The new program expands this list of materials to include, magazines, inserts, catalogs, cereal boxes, junk mail, office paper, steel cans, brown and green glass, milk/juice cartons, drink boxes, and cut cardboard.
Single Stream Recycling FAQs
When can I expect to receive my new rollout cart?
It is anticipated that the new rollout carts will be distributed sometime during the month of April. They will come with informational flyers attached to further explain the program and the date by which collection using the new 64 gallon rollout cart will begin.
After the new program begins, what should I do with my current recycling Bin(s)?
You may keep the current bins for your own personal use or you may put them out curbside between April 28, 2008 and May 3, 2008 to be recycled. If putting them out curbside, please attach a note saying that you would like to recycle the bin and the Waste Management driver will collect it. *Do not use these bins for curbside collection anymore as the new 64 gallon rollout cart allows for mechanical collection and the driver will not get out of the truck to empty your bins.
What materials can I recycle?
The following materials are accepted for recycling under this program: newspapers, magazines, inserts, catalogs, cereal boxes, junk mail, office paper, steel cans, aluminum/bi-metal cans, clear, brown and green glass, milk/juice cartons, drink boxes, cut cardboard, and plastic containers numbered 1 through 7 (plastic bags are not accepted).
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is important that you only recycle the materials allowed under this program. Materials not listed above, regardless of whether they may be recyclable or not should not be placed in the recycling cart. If contaminated with materials other than those listed above, it is possible the whole load of materials in the cart will be rejected and disposed of as trash.
Do I have to separate my recyclable materials?
No, under this program all accepted materials can be commingled together in the cart and no separation is necessary.
Has my recycling collection day changed?
There are some areas of the City that may experience a change in their recycling collection day. Those areas will be notified in advance by Waste Management and the City will post on its web site as soon as the information becomes available. There will be no change in garbage collection days at this time; however, those areas experiencing a change in their recycling collection day will eventually have a change in garbage collection days so that both garbage and recycling collection occur on the same day. If you have any questions please contact Waste Management at (954) 975-7500.
Am I responsible for the cart?
Yes, you are responsible to maintain the cart in good condition. Waste Management will only repair or replace carts that are damaged as a result of their collection process or due to wear and tear over time. Residents should report any collection process damage immediately and directly to Waste Management. Residents may purchase a replacement cart directly from Waste Management at (954) 974-7500. The City of Parkland does not stock or sell replacement containers.
The New 64 Gallon Rollout Cart
All carts such as the one pictured on the left will be white with a green lid and delivered sometime during the month of April 2008.
These carts can be filled with accepted recyclable materials only and not used for trash. When putting the cart out for collection, the lid should always be in the closed position to protect from rain or other contamination.
Proper Placement: The cart should be placed within two feet (2’)” of the edge of road as shown in the picture to the right. The front of the cart (side with metal bar) must be facing the road so that the mechanical arm of the truck can attach to the metal bar.
Improper Placement: It is important that the carts be placed curbside properly. The driver will not exit the collection truck to make carts accessible for collection. To that end, if they are not placed correctly, they will not be collected. These four (4) examples would be considered improper placement. Clockwise from left: front of cart not facing roadway correctly, cart located too far from edge of road, front of cart facing wrong direction, and cart located too close to sign post, mailbox, telephone pole, etc.
